Levels of deprivation are measured by using the Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD, 2004), which looks at seven topic areas, known as domains. These are used to assess the relative levels of deprivation across the city or can be looked at individually to highlight deficiency relating to a specific indicator, such as health. When looking at the combined total of the local authority of Portsmouths scores across all topic areas, the authority is ranked as the 88th most deprived in the country (4th most deprived in the South East), out of a total of 354 authorities. The IMD was used to award Neighbourhood Renewal Funding, and the 88 most deprived authorities in the country were selected to receive this and hence Portsmouth was included |
